I hate to spoil everyone's fantasy but Eve is actually consentual pvp once you understand a few of the game mechanics.
See the game doesn't actually have to BE dangerous, it just has to FEEL dangerous. Even though I know I can warp off whenever I want, seeing another player at a warpgate still makes my pulse race, when I get chased around in 0.0 and locked by an inty, it still gets my palms sweaty.
I know that there is nothing short of a warp bubble and a gang of inties and smartbombs that can kill me before I can get to the gate, but it still makes my heart race.
What makes Eve cool is the ILLUSION of danger, the ILLUSION of piracy, the ILLUSION of crime.
To uninitiated players like Vang Vorgain, lowsec is filled with bloodthirsty pirates who camp gates and make them impossible to pass.
The people who actually KNOW the mechanics of the game, KNOW that you cannot pin me down in a fight I choose not to be in. You can bring your whole corp to camp me, you can camp the warpgate with 50 sensor boosted inties, there is literally nothing you can do to keep me from operating.
Even if you camp your whole corp outside my station, I still have your members on my buddy list, I can see them in local, I can sit in station and do remote trading making 15 mil an hour, meanwhile you will get bored and warp away. There is nothing you can do to me, unless *I* choose to engage you in a fight.
I've spent the last 2 weeks in lowsec trading in a hauler, so far I've run into 3 pirates, they can't do schit to me. The only thing they can do is kill noobs, and this I do not consider a negative experience. Sure its traumatic, but at that stage you can't lose much anyway, so if you get ganked by pirates as a noob, just think of it as a very cheap education.
These are the facts, that carebears do not understand.
I envy their ignorance, because I kinda liked the game when it felt more dangerous. I kind of liked it better when I thought every .4 gate was camped by viscious bloodthirsty pirates who would gank me in nanoseconds.
I know better now, that grass roots piracy is all but dead. That WCS makes it such that nobody is really ever in danger.
